What are some noted apprentice companies that strong ballet and modern dancer might be interested in joining?

I am interested in joining an apprentice company (leading up to, of course, a professional company) and have no idea to start. What are some noted apprentice companies that could potentially suit a contemporary ballet and modern dancer?

That all depends on what *kind* of apprentice company you're looking for, and in what area!

If you are looking to eventually join a professional ballet company, an apprentice or "second" company is a great place to start. The Joffrey Ballet has a second company, as does ABT. Many regional companies will take you on as a full fledged corps de ballet member off the bat, which is also a great way to gain experience and connections!

In terms of modern Companies, the San Francisco-Bay Area is positively flush with them. If it's more modern you're looking to pursue, check out some of the studios and schools in the area and see what companies and artists are in residence with them. Attend shows, see who and what you like, and you'll have a better sense of what you want.

Check out the directory at the back of Dance Magazine, which lists really all the companies that are out there. Best of luck!
